(1922-1993) began painting at a very young age. As an art student, he studied with the famous Abstract Expressionist teacher, Hans Hofmann, and he counted such painters as Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning among his friends. He began showing work with Peggy Guggenheim at the age of 24, and his paintings are now in the collections of MOMA, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Whitney Museum, to name a few. He committed his life to figurative painting, even as it fell out of fashion, and he remained well respected among leading painters and critics throughout his life. His legacy is maintained by his son, Robert DeNiro Jr, who has filled his restaurant Tribeca Grill with his father’s work and also recently made the documentary "Remembering the Artist" about the life and work of his father.
