(1907-1975) studied at Harvard and the Art Students League in NYC, where he moved in 1928. He is known for painting realist and representational work during a time when Abstract Expressionist painting was dominating the art world. His subjects are primarily landscapes and portraits, painted in Maine, NYC, and at his home on Long Island. He continued to paint figuratively throughout his career, as pop art and minimal art came into vogue. His work is in many major collections, including the Smithsonian, the Whitney, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
