MARSDEN HARTLEY

(1877-1943) was born in Lewiston Maine and moved to Ohio at age 14. After studying at the Cleveland School of Art, he moved to New York City in 1922 and studied under William Merritt Chase. There he became friends with Albert Pinkham Ryder, Walt Whitman, Henry David Thoreau, and Ralph Waldo Emerson. He also traveled to Europe where he knew Gertrude Stein. When he returned to the US, he moved to Maine, and lived his life as a painter of American life, and was aligned with the Regionalist movement.
