(b. 1924) is an influential American painter, cited by critics as the preeminent figure painter of the 1960s to 2000s. He has been a leader in the revival in realist art. His career began early, when he had two paintings printed in Life Magazine at the age of eighteen. During art school at the Carnegie Institute, he became close friends with Andy Warhol and the two moved to NYC together in 1949. After early experiments with abstract painting, he began painting realistic portraits of nudes after attending life drawing sessions in the studio of Mercedes Matter. He continues to paint in this fashion today, after decades of working figuratively while the art world went through trends of abstraction and conceptual art. He now has paintings in the collections of over 70 public art museums.
