MERCEDES MATTER

(1913 - 2001) played an active role in the mid century New York art world, and was close friends with Fernand Leger, Jackson Pollock, Willem deKooning, Lee Krasner, Philip Guston, and others. She worked with Leger who introduced her to her husband, Herbert Matter. Her father, Arthur B Carles, studied with Matisse, and encouraged her to begin painting at age 6. In 1964 Mercedes founded the New York Studio School, where she was dean for many years, and taught until her death.
