1. What other profession is similar to being an artist and why?

A Chef. A Chef has talent and skills to take various food elements and create those elements into a delicious meal. They are responsible for plating, design and presentation of the meal. They too also have "fans" that return to eat their creations but also critics that do not return. A Chef is always coming up with new menu ideas. An artist has skills and talent. An artist's work is always evolving. They are creating art that some will love and some will not.

2. What’s the nicest thing you can remember someone said about your work, or an individual piece?

A friend on social media wrote a comment, "Your creativity always amazes me." Another friend sent an image of one of my framed cards saying "Just wanted to share, I'm representing your artwork in my entryway." Compliments about my art always make me smile!

3. What’s one thing you’d like everyone to know about you as an artist?

I take many photos when hiking and traveling. If an image I take truly inspires me, I try to capture it on canvas, gessoed board or wood. I use acrylic paints and jump back and forth with brushes and palette knives to paint depending on the image.
4. What was the last piece of art that you saw that blew you away?

"Sojourn" by Detroit artist Andrea Kowch. I work part time at the Grand Rapids Art Museum. Recently, this painting was hung on the 3rd floor gallery from their permanent collection. The acrylic painting is beautiful!

5. What’s something you haven’t done but you want to do in art/painting?

My goal is to paint on a larger scale. My goal is to paint 30 x 40 and larger.

6. Which artist do you like better - Ingres or Delacroix, and why?*

I would choose Ingres. His portrait paintings are beautiful! His style is refined and use of light and shadow is dramatic.

*The reason we ask about Delacroix and Ingres is because they were contemporaries with wildly different styles!
